|May-08-15||State Supreme Court Finds Pension Reform Law Unconstitutional||
The Illinois Supreme Court today issued a unanimous decision affirming the Sangamon County Circuit Court’s decision that Public Act 98-599 is unconstitutional.
The ruling does not alter the administration of SURS, as no changes had been implemented from the pension reform law due to the stay ordered by Judge Belz of the Sangamon County Circuit Court.
“SURS remains committed to serving members and fulfilling our mission statement of securing and delivering the retirement benefits promised to our members,” said Executive Director W. Bryan Lewis.
|May-04-15||J. Fred Giertz Elected to SURS Board of Trustees||
J. Fred Giertz has been elected to serve a six-year term on the SURS Board of Trustees by the System’s annuitant members. His term begins July 15, 2015.
Trustee Giertz is a professor emeritus of economics at the University of Illinois in Urbana- Champaign. He previously served on the SURS Board from 1995-2005 as an appointed member and from 2009-2012 as an elected active member.

State Universities Retirement System (SURS) Executive Director W. Bryan Lewis today announced a vacancy on the SURS Board of Trustees. The elected active (contributing) -member seat will be filled by a majority vote of the other five elected trustees on or before June 1, 2015.

SURS is currently holding an election to fill one annuitant-member seat on the Board of Trustees. Only annuitant members are allowed to vote. Election packets have been mailed to eligible members.
Two candidates are vying for the seat – J. Fred Giertz and Mitchell R. Vogel. Members may vote for one candidate.
The State Universities Retirement System of Illinois (SURS) is soliciting proposals from independent public accounting firms to provide employer audit services for employers (state universities, community colleges and affiliated organizations) with members participating in SURS. Provided services shall include, but not be limited to: client meetings and consultations; development of audit objectives and audit programs, field testing at employers, reporting to employers, SURS management and SURS Audit Committee. SURS expects to sign a multi-year contract for these auditing services.

The State Universities Retirement System Board of Trustees today unanimously selected W. Bryan Lewis as the new executive director of the $17.4 billion state pension fund. Lewis’ appointment becomes effective April 6, 2015.
“Mr. Lewis has more than 15 years of experience in institutional investments and financial management,” said Lindsay Anderson, SURS Board of Trustees chairperson. “His broad experience and in-depth knowledge will be a true asset to the System in the years to come as we strive to secure and deliver the retirement benefits promised to our members.”
