Governor Appoints Schumacher to SURS Board

Gov. Bruce Rauner has appointed Lisa Schumacher of Chicago to the State Universities Retirement System (SURS) Board of Trustees.

Schumacher is a financial industry professional with extensive experience in futures and options. She is currently an independent consultant. Previously, she served as director of market development at Intercontinental Exchange; as vice president of business development at NYSE/Liffe; and as a futures and options broker and member of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and Chicago Board of Trade working for JPM, Barclays and Mizuho. She also worked as an execution trader for a renowned hedge fund.

Schumacher earned an undergraduate degree in finance and accounting from the University of Notre Dame and an MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.

Schumacher will serve a six-year term that will expire in June 2024. The Illinois Senate must confirm her appointment.

Other members of the SURS Board of Trustees include Chairperson Tom Cross, Aaron Ammons, Mark Cozzi, Dennis Cullen, John Engstrom, J. Fred Giertz, Craig McCrohon, Steven Rock, Collin Van Meter and Antonio Vasquez.

The SURS board is comprised of 11 members: four elected participating (active) SURS members, two elected annuitant (retired) SURS members, four members appointed by the governor, and the chairperson, appointed by the governor, who also serves as the chair of the Illinois State Board of Higher Education.

The State Universities Retirement System of Illinois serves over 230,000 members, 61 employers and has assets of over $21 billion. The System provides retirement, disability and survivor benefits to state university and community college faculty and staff.
